In October 1998, University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was tortured and murdered near Laramie, Wyoming. Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson were arrested for the crime and, during the trial, it was alleged that they had targeted Matthew Shepard because he was gay.
In November 1998, New York Theatre Company ‘The Tectonic Theater Project’ travelled to Laramie and began conducting interviews with the people of the town; these interviews would later be collated and edited to become the basis of a multi award-winning play, The Laramie Project.
As part of an international series of readings entitled ‘The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later’, local Theatre collective ‘twentyfivebelfast’ present a reading of the original Laramie Project play as part of the Outburst festival.
Directed by Des Kennedy, who directed the Northern Irish premiere of the play in 2003, and featuring some original actors from the same production, The Laramie Project explores the anatomy of a hate-crime, the effect of violence on a community and the responsibility of artists to investigate the truth.
